This topic covers Islam’s spread, the Crusades, and Late Middle Ages political changes in England. Muslim belief is that the Prophet Muhammad began receiving divine revelations in 610 CE, calling for submission to the one God, the expectation of the Last Judgment, and care for the poor and needy. The early Muslim conquests spread Islam. The Umayyad Caliphate stretched from Muslim Iberia to the Indus River by the 8th century CE. The Islamic Golden Age produced many Middle Ages polymaths, astronomers, mathematicians, physicians, and philosophers.

The medieval Latin Church started, supported, and sometimes led the Crusades. The Crusades to the Holy Land between 1095 and 1291 to retake Jerusalem and its surroundings from Islamic rule are the best known. From the First Crusade, which reclaimed Jerusalem in 1099, dozens of Crusades shaped European history for centuries. Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade at Clermont in 1095. He called for an armed pilgrimage to Jerusalem and military support for the Byzantine emperor against the Turks. The first Crusaders sought religious salvation, feudal obligations, fame, and economic or political gain. Later crusades were led by organized armies, sometimes kings. The crusade between Christians and Muslims in the Iberian Peninsula began in 1123 and was renamed the Reconquista after the Muslim Emirate of Granada fell in 1492.
